OneBlood is not the first and is unlikely to be the last not-for-profit or health related organization to be affected by ransomware.
In many cases the primary purpose of attacks these days is exfiltration of sensitive and therefore ransom-able data, but unfortunately in some cases this comes hand in hand with destruction of data - what is known as a double extortion attack. Even if an organization considers leaked information not worth paying for, getting operational quickly when data is destroyed can sometimes encourage them to pay - as happened with the Colonial Pipeline attack in 2021.
For this reason, ransomware gangs believe that these double extortion attacks offer them the highest likelihood of securing payment.
No organization, large or small, is immune to these attacks. Cybercriminals are increasingly using sophisticated techniques and tactics to increase their chances of success.
By implementing a multi-layered security approach and fostering a culture of cybersecurity awareness, organizations can better protect themselves against these evolving threats.
